Providing Exceptional Services

Since 1948

Company

Precision Gage Co. was founded on 3 core values: listen to the customer to understand their unique needs, share our immense knowledge and expertise, and continuously provide unparalleled value. Since 1948 these principles have earned customer loyalty and provided exceptional customer experiences.

Our History

Precision Gage Co. was founded by Herb Layland in 1948 in Chicago, Illinois. While working for Size Control, he had designed several specialty gages for clients—a service outside of the company’s primary focus. His employer encouraged him to start his own business to serve this emerging need.

In addition to engineering and building specialty gage projects, Herb represented all the major inspection and metrology companies. This allowed Precision Gage Co. to provide customers with the best available solutions on the market.

In 1952, Precision Gage debuted the Vari-Roll Dual Flank Composite Tester. It was developed in response to customers in the fine pitch gear market in search of a smaller bench-top inspection unit. Customers responded with enthusiasm. To this day, it is regarded as a standard for fine pitch gear inspection.

At the request of our customers in the nuclear industry, we established our own calibration lab, which is still in operation today. We verify the accuracy of the gages we sell on premises, and we can provide third-party dispute resolution with ease.

In 1971, Roger Layland joined his father in the business, and has since worked in all facets of the company. He currently provides technical expertise in all gaging matters and he is the resident expert on gear and spline inspection.

In 1997, Precision Gage joined the American Gear Manufactures Association. We are active members— Roger is an active member of the Gear Accuracy Committee, and we are a consistent presence at Gear Expo.

RG Layland represents the third generation of family involvement with Precision Gage Co. After he graduated from Purdue University and gained valuable industry experience outside of the company, he joined the business in 2007. He has implemented 3D design capability with the utilization of Solidworks and he is continuously focused on expanding our services and product offerings.

At the end of 2015, Precision Gage acquired Astral Precision Equipment. This represents the joining of two highly-respected companies in the Chicago inspection market. Our combined team, as well as the exclusive product lines that define each company’s reputation, makes for an exciting future for Precision Gage Co. and our customers.
